Aberdeen Maryland History
Many people are unaware that Aberdeen Proving Ground is a nationally registered site, but it is located in Edgewood, Maryland. Graces, including the US Army Corps of Engineers and the United States Army Air Force, and includes many of the country's most important military facilities, such as Fort Belvidere, Fort Leavenworth and Fort Knox.
A major destination in Annapolis is the Banneker-Douglass Museum, which preserves the history of African Americans in Maryland. Close to Baltimore are the University of Maryland, College Park and the Maryland Museum of Natural History.
The village became Aberdeen after William Rogers, an educated and well-connected Baltimore man who worked on the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Baltimore railroad and was looking for a watering station in 1835, visited Harvard. Rogers saw a cross and went to the Halls Park estate he had bought with a partner in 1855 and surveyed and drew a plot of land he called "Aberdeen" on the original document. The restored Plat is still in the Aberdeen Room of the Archives Museum. In 1858 Aberdeen was officially declared, and in 1862 the supervisor of the new railway renamed it Aberdeen, after the city's first mayor, John A. Aberdeen.

The Harford County newspaper has identified the Aberdeen Proving Ground as one of Maryland's historic sites. It is registered in the National Register of Historic Places and has been uploaded to the National Historic Landmarks Database of the US National Park Service.
The historic Pooles Island Lighthouse was built in the late 19th century on the site of the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County, Maryland. The lighthouse on Pooles Island is not only one of Maryland's oldest lighthouses and Maryland's oldest lighthouse, but also of historical importance to the community of Aberdeen.
At that time, World War II was under way and the Aberdeen Proving Ground needed many more test facilities, as its mission during the war involved the exploration and testing of munitions. The government acquired a further 7,000 hectares and extended the facility virtually to the outskirts of Aberdeen. In the 1940s, it expanded and acquired a further 7,000 hectares, which moved the plant north. Although there were 1,800 acres on Pooles Island when the island of Spesutie was taken over in 1945, 7,000 acres were added during the 1950s and 1960s, stretching from APG to almost within the city limits of Aberdeen.
In 1773, Harford County was founded by secession from Baltimore County and the area was divided into a larger county. Its headquarters were established in Bush (aka Harfords Town) and moved to Baltimore City. It occupied what is now the eastern part of Aberdeen city limits, as well as parts of Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Howard and Prince George's counties.
At the height of the Second World War, the Aberdeen Proving Ground already had room for personnel recruitment and was created as a replacement for the Sandy Hook Proves Ground, which was too cramped to store the large weapons that were being tested. The adjacent centre of Aberdeen and the nearby town of Harfords Town have been combined into a village called Aberdeen.
On April 19, 1953, the fire department accepted membership in the Maryland State Fireman's Association and Mr. Richardson served as the first fire chief. At the time, 19 members had completed two years of training with Joppa, who had been briefed by the Baltimore County Fire Department chief and the chief of emergency services. In January 1954, they were recognized as accredited rural fire departments by Maryland State Underwriters. Aberdeen itself is home to the Ripken Stadium and Concorde Point is about 3 miles away. Access to Aberdeen is via Maryland Route 22, which is also directly connected to Baltimore - Washington International Airport and Baltimore County Airport. Other states that serve Aberdeen include Route 1, Route 2 and Route 3, and Maryland State Route 7. When Aberdeen Farmers' Market is held on Thursdays from May to October during the season.
The Yellow Line of Route 4 is the Aberdeen Circulator, serving various neighborhoods in the city of Aberdeen as well as Baltimore - Washington International Airport.
There are two railway lines that run through Aberdeen: the Philadelphia - Wilmington - Baltimore Railroad and the Baltimore - Washington International Airport. Aberdeen is located on the old Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railways, which is now operated by CSX. The village of Halls Cross Road is located on a major thoroughfare between Alexandria and Philadelphia called Old Post Road. It has remained small since it was explored as an irrigation station by the Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland Railroad in 1835. However, its proximity to the railway has allowed it to flourish in the city since the beginning of the 20th century.
